2.0 - GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Personal Conduct
1. The safe way to do a job is the right way.
2. Horseplay will not be tolerated.
3. Upon entering the room you have four responsibilities: to yourself, your fellow students, your teacher, and to the shop instruments and equipment.
4. Students are to remain in their seats until attendance is taken and instructions given.
5. Avoid unnecessary talking in the classroom because it leads to confusion, division of attention, and interferes with instruction.
6. Keep all four legs of a chair or stool on the floor, tilting a chair or stool is dangerous.
7. Staplers, thumbtacks, paper clips, wiping cloths, and rubber bands have a purpose; do not use them as playthings.
8. Procedures to follow in case of fire, earthquake, or other disasters should be known and practiced.
9. Cultivate personal caution at all times.
10. Show enthusiasm about safety--pass along any good safety ideas.
11. Students are not to leave the lab or classroom until the instructor has granted permission.
12. Tossing or throwing objects is not permitted.
13. Know how to lift and carry long, large and heavy objects and materials. Hint: use your legs, NOT YOUR BACK.
14. Walk--don't run! Don't push your friend or neighbor!
15. Observe all safety lines around machines.
16. Report anything to your instructor that may lead to an accident including dull and broken tools.
17. Cutting edge tools and tools with sharp points should be carried with the points and cutting edges down. These tools are not to be carried in your pockets. Do not cut on tabletops.
18. When the clean up is completed, students will return to their seats and wait for instructor to dismiss them.
19. Safety instructions have been compiled and studied for the safety of all, a strict observance of all the rules is mandatory.
First Aid
1. All injuries, no matter how minor, must be reported immediately to the instructor.
2. A complete first aid kit is available for use in each lab.
3. First aid materials are used only with the consent of the instructor.
4. If any doubt exists as to the extent of an accident, the student will be sent to the school nurse to decide if further treatment is needed.
5. Foreign bodies in the eye are to be removed only by a nurse or doctor.
Housekeeping
1. Keep the aisles clean and clear.
2. Keep the floor clean of oily substances, photo chemicals, and articles that might result in a fall.
3. Watch out for overhanging material.
4. Keep volatile liquids and acids in appropriate fireproof containers.
5. Place all scrap in scrap containers.
6. Keep tools, especially handles, free of grease, oil, glue and other foreign materials.
7. Know the location of fire extinguisher. If they have been used, be sure to have them recharged immediately.
Machines
1. All equipment and machines are to be used only after adequate instruction in their proper usage has been given, a safety test taken and passed, and the student has been granted permission to use the equipment and machine.
2. Students violating safety rules in use of equipment may be denied the privilege of using the equipment.
3. Only one person at a time may use any equipment. If it is necessary to have a helper, be sure that it is understood who the operator will be.
4. Use the proper tools for the job.
5. Never play with equipment.
6. Report defective equipment to teacher immediately.
Dress
1. Students, teachers, and visitors shall wear suitable eye protection as specified in the eye safety laws for the special shop areas.
2. Students who wear glasses must meet the U.S. Safety glass requirement (doctor's note required as proof) or wear plastic glasses over their glasses.
3. Wear proper clothing for the job.
4. Students with long hair, who use equipment, where there is danger of the hair getting caught in a machine or obstructing the operator's vision, must wear a hair net or cap to keep hair in place.
PHOTO SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
1. Safety glasses must be worn when mixing photographic chemicals when working with chemicals specifically deemed harmful to eyes by the manufacturer.
2. Safety glasses must be worn when using the air hose to clean any photo equipment.
3. When taking pictures in any area other than photo lab, all safety rules of that area must be followed.
4. The use of the static master brush for wiping dust from negatives has been proven unsafe because of radioactivity. Do not use.
5. Be sure your hands are perfectly dry before handling electrical equipment.
6. Unplug all electrical portable equipment after use.
7. Keep all acid liquids in unbreakable containers.
8. Always add acid to water, never the reverse.
9. Carry all darkroom chemicals slowly and very carefully to prevent spilling.
10. Use extreme care when using any cutting instruments.
11. If force has to be used on any piece of equipment, there is usually something wrong; check with instructor.
12. Handle glass parts with extreme care.
13. Adequate ventilation must be available when using photographic chemicals.
14. When through with any chemical processing, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
15. Keep hands away from eyes and mouth during processing.
16. Be sure all containers are properly labeled.
17. Report any allergies to instructor immediately.
18. Keep a safe distance from flash or floodlights because they may explode.
19. When mounting a camera to a tripod use extreme care.
20. In order for students to use the compressed air or dry nitrogen they must have instructor's permission.
Darkroom:
1. Move slowly to prevent slipping because the light is dim, it is hard to see, and the floor could be wet.
2. Each student must sign up on the chalkboard located on the door before entering.
3. No more than two students are permitted in a film room at a time.
4. Cover chemicals in the film rooms to prevent oxidation.
5. Be very careful when cutting paper to be sure that all that is cut is paper, not your fingers.
6. Do not leave paper in the drawers in the darkroom.
7. Darkroom chemicals will be contaminated if the other chemicals are splashed into them.
8. Enlargers are fragile pieces of equipment. Please do not force them.
9. Do not use a piece of equipment unless you have received the instructor's ok.
10. When it is time to clean up, clean up your work area and then do your assigned cleanup.
